'Celeus' are medium-sized stocky woodpeckers found inside the forest.

Perhaps the most difficult to find in the genus celeus. Note black chest on all races. Male and female similar except red malar mark. The northeast South American subspecies has no barring on belly and is sometimes considered a distinct species.
