Colaptes is a genus of medium-sized woodpeckers most of which are often seen on the ground with dirt on their bills, and are often called Flickers.

Very different than the flickers and terrestrial woodpeckers in the Colaptes genus in that in rarely if ever goes to the ground. The race in south Peru and Bolivia has a black crown and is sometimes called the Black-crowned Woodpecker.

A medium to large vocal woodpecker that, unlike others in its genus, rarely comes to the ground. Amount of yellow varies across large range, and nothern and southern populations may soon be split.
