Very similar to Carmiol's Tanager. Moves inside the forest in loud, noisy groups. Male and female alike.

A skulking medium-sized tanager whose colors are usually difficult to see in shadows. Note grey head in birds in northwest Ecuador and northward into Colombia, and more uniform coloration southward. Ochre front and olive back, and strong bill.
