Very different than the flickers and terrestrial woodpeckers in the Colaptes genus in that in rarely if ever goes to the ground.

A medium to large vocal woodpecker that, unlike others in its genus, rarely comes to the ground. Amount of yellow varies across large range, and nothern and southern populations may soon be split.
