Formerly called the Blue-crowned Manakin. The Amazon subspecies were split from the Pacific subspecies (now called Velvety Manakin), and is generally common but rarely photographed.

Perhaps the species started as a hybrid between the Opal-crowned Manakin and the Snow-capped Manakin, and later evolved a golden crown. Rare and local and once believed to be extinct.
