Split from the White-winged Black Tyrant, and sometimes called the Caatinga Black Tyrant because of the 'Caatinga' desert region where it is found.

Austral migrant from south Argentina as far north as Paraguay and Bolivia. Female brownish like all female Black Tyrants. Note white band in wings of male. Virtually identical to White-winged Black Tyrant but smaller.

The female of the race along the Amazon River is streaked, but is dark grey in the other two races. HBW now called the Amazon River subspecies (sclateri) Sclater's Black Tyrant, and it looks a little like a female Scarlet Flycatcher.
