Spottily distributed at mid altitude levels (1200m) in Panama and Colombia.

Note immatures have a black bill. The subspecies in Magdalena Valley, erythrorhynchus, has a different vocalization

Part of a large split of the Stripe-headed Brushfinch. Identified by range. Note black chest band compared to others.

Widespread and common in Andean cloud forests from 1500m to 2500m. Often in pairs.

Often seen on the ground at edge of trail. A bit larger than most 'new world sparrows'.
The immature is uniformly colored.

Found in dry scrub and dry forest in the northeast. Comes to feeders.
