The female of the race along the Amazon River is streaked, but is dark grey in the other two races. HBW now called the Amazon River subspecies (sclateri) Sclater's Black Tyrant, and it looks a little like a female Scarlet Flycatcher.

Stays one to two meters above the forest floor.

Once called the Andean Tyrant, but split into this species and Plumbeous Tyrant.
