This species has a black throat in the southern part of its range. In the northern part of its range it looks very similar to the mostly Colombian Scrub Tanager, but is found at lower altitudes and has a slightly less defined crown and has slightly different color shades with buff sides and back. |
A small relatively common tanager sometimes seen outside of the forest. Usually seen in pairs. |
There are two races of Black-headed Tanager. Those found in north Colombia and north Venezuela have a yellow body and blue on the wings. Those in south Venezuela have a grey body and black wings, and are sometimes called the Black-hooded Tanager. |
Female looks a bit like the Speckled Tanager. |
Most similar to the Blue-necked Tanager. |
